Unmasking Psoriasis

Support and Resources for those living with
psoriasis and for the health care community
World Psoriasis Day

On World Psoriasis Day 2021, the Canadian Psoriasis Network (CPN), the Canadian Association of Psoriasis Patients (CAPP), and Unmasking Psoriasis, an awareness group in Saskatchewan, released findings from Working it Out: A Report on the Experiences of People with Psoriatic Disease in the Canadian Workplace, demonstrating that the accommodation needs of many people with psoriatic disease remain unmet. Drawing inspiration from the International Federation of Psoriasis Associations (IFPA) theme of #BeUnited for World Psoriasis Day 2021, the groups are asking employers and policy makers to #BeUnited and support people with psoriatic disease in their work lives.

The onset of psoriatic disease - including psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis - commonly affect people in the prime of their lives, with psoriasis typically being diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 30 or 50 and 60.

The three patient groups call on employers and policy makers to recognize that psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis are episodic and chronic diseases that can result in disability without appropriate care, treatment and support - including in the workplace. Initiatives are needed to educate employers and policy makers about the potential impacts of these conditions on patients and their families. Workplaces can make a difference by providing workers with the tools that they need to understand workplace policies on disability and accommodations and supporting workers who need them.

About us
Margaret was bar tending an event when one of the customers saw her hands and refused to accept his drink. Devastated, she spoke with Dr. Hawkins, her dermatologist, about the consequences of this lack of understanding. Together they decided they could make an effort to change this reality by fund-raising to raise awareness.

People living with psoriasis are often debilitated and stigmatized. Even in the the health care community there can be challenges in understanding the disease and finding the right treatment path. This organization has been initially set up to provide support in the form of discussion forums, resource links, and information sessions.

Award Recognition

Over the last year and a half, Margaret Peters (Unmasking Psoriasis), Antonella Scali (Canadian Psoriasis Network) and Rachael Manion (Canadian Association of Psoriasis Patients) have been working diligently on a campaign to educate policy makers and politicians on the federal level about Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis.

Although they had been booked to physically bring their campaign to Ottawa last October, Covid-19 changed their plans. Through 'virtual' innovation they continued their work and have been successfully bringing awareness of the circumstances and issues of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis patients to the attention of those who can affect change.

Their hard work was recently recognized by the Canadian Dermatology Association. They are thrilled and very honoured to receive the 2021 Public Education Award (not-for-profit). The plaque reads: Impact of Covid-19 on the Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Community in Canada campaign.
